Sorting out / Going further

We began our week with a trip to the Natural History Society.

We had a list of questions that we went there with seeking answers from the curators there. The trip gave us so much of information about tiny creatures , their lifestyle, their identification traits, food habits, life span etc etc.

Learning about the changes the butterfly undergoes.

Inspired by the butterfly presentation we set out to work on our presentations.

To enhance our IT skills further we learnt how to create a google drive presentation as some of us chose to present our research through a presentation.
As a school we strongly believe and practice academic honesty. To inculcate the same we learnt how to cite sites that we have taken pictures and information from. We also gave credit to those who helped us or if we had used anything created by someone.

Finally, our budding entomologists were ready to give their presentations and teach their buddies about the insect they were researching on.

The presentation we created - Lady bugs
Grasshoppers
Dragonflies

Through these presentations we tried to understand and address the concepts of -
* Function - What is the role of the tiny creatures?
*Change - What are the changes the creatures undergo
- How do they adapt
* Responsibility - How should we behave / take care of them

As we are looking at responsibility as one of our key concepts for this UOI, we took on the role of a teacher and were made responsible for teaching our friends about the life cycle of the creature we were studying about. We also had to plan an design a craft activity for the same.

Using our research and communication skills we continued to work on our Non Chronological reports.

We continued to work on graphs and understanding of frequency tables.

During our assembly this week we gathered with all our PYP friends and spoke about things we can say or do to fill others and our own buckets.

During our guided reading time we shared about the books we have been reading over the past weeks. We gave our reviews on them and tried to persuade our friends to read them.
We also went to the library and picked the books we would like to read in our next guided reading time.

Our friend Meeshaa presented what she has been learning about in her Spanish class.
Bravo Meeshaa!!! Thank you Ms. Shruti for such fun Spanish lessons.

Finding out

This week, we have taken on the roles of entomologists. We have taken on researching about creatures to understand and learn more about that.

We began the week by reflecting on what we saw at the Mahim Nature Park.
To understand the habitats of insects better we thought of conducting an experiment. We took few materials -  newspaper, cloth, jute material, clear polythene, cardboard, black polythene and placed them in the school ground for a week. We decided to go back to look at it on Friday and see what we find.

We predicted what we thought would happen.
We took a poll to see what would be the favorite material. Used the data collected and put it together in a bar graph.

Our budding entomologists have been busy working hard on researching about the different creatures. Stay tuned!!

Observing labelled pictures of tiny creatures to understand the body parts.

We visited the lab to look at the cockroach, millipedes, snail, spider and house fly more closely under the microscope and magnifying glasses. Thank you Ms. Parvina for helping us out in the lab.
We discovered that cockroaches have white blood.

Report writing

We looked at a report on a honey bee and other insects to understand the features of a report.

Understanding the importance of planning well so that we have all the information to write a good report.

Graphing

The data we collected from the Mahim Nature Park, helped us learn about how we can represent data in a graphical from through graphs.

We calculated how many different kinds of butterflies we spotted there and made a bar graph to represent the same information.

All of us had spotted different number of butterflies. We represented this data through a pictogram.

Search Shark

As we are looking at developing our research skills through this unit, Search shark helped us understand how to choose effective key words for searching online. We practiced selecting keywords that are most relevant to a search prompt.

Family tip sheet

Reading circles

During morning work time we have been working on making words through the game - Boggle.

We visited the NCPA auditorium for a music concert. It was fun to watch so many people playing at the same time and learning about the different instruments. Thank you Ms. Amanda and Mr. Pierlucca for arranging this fun trip.

At Edubridge we strongly believe that a positive parent - teacher relationship contributes a great deal to the child's success. A big thank you to you parents for taking time out to attend the PTSM and sharing this journey with us.

Tuning In - Sharing the Planet

This week we began our new Unit of Inquiry under the theme 'Sharing the Planet'.
Our central idea is  We share the planet with many tiny creatures.

Tuning In

We began by sorting the pictures of animals into different categories. We discussed and reasoned why each one went where they said it should.

We brainstormed as to what will be our new UOI.

The next day we had a gallery walk. We began by walking around and observing all the different pictures placed on the tables. After observing them carefully we wrote down any thoughts/ questions/comments or facts we knew about these pictures.

We brainstormed a second time to see if our idea about our new UOI had changed. It indeed had!!!!

The following day we discussed the theme our unit was under. Based on the past two days activities we tried to identify which part of the definition will we be looking at through this UOI.

Finally we unfolded our main idea.

We had two surprise viistors in our classroom. Can you guess who came to vist us????

A slug
As responsible people we took the slug back and set it back in the bushes in the shade back to its habitat.

and a Cockroach!!!!

Our first field trip of the year!!!!

As part of the tuning in we went to the Mahim nature park to see what are the different insects we could find. What are the habitats they are found in .

Before we went on the trip, along with our friends from Skg we made our essential agreements for the field trip.

While we were there we maintained a tab on what were the different kinds of butterflies we spotted and how many through tally marks, Stay tuned to see what we do with the information collected at the Mahim Nature Park.

Post the field trip we reflected on what we had learnt there and noted down what had made our curious minds ticking!!

In Language, we looked at a report on a dog and tried to identify the features of a non chronological report. We compared it to persuasive writing to understand how different texts were written in different manners depending on the audience and the purpose.

Guided Reading time

Morning time we have been working on punctuation.

In Math, we have been working on our subtraction skills.

We worked with our Grade 2 buddies to celebrate the birthday of Gandhiji. We tied to relate to the preaching of Gandhiji with our learner profiles.

Making the three monkeys of Gandhiji to inspire us to be positive communicators, balanced listeners and smart thinkers.
